Nailing Crap Together And Calling It Art by Gary Warren Niebuhr
Exhibition dates: April 18 – May 30
Gary Warren Niebuhr is a found object, mixed media, collage, and assemblage artist. His objective in making art is to take objects and images, re-purpose them in harmony with a theme, and construct a work that is entertaining and delivers a message. He likes to incorporate irony, satire, and humor in his messages.
“I like to tell a story. I am a lifelong reader and an occasional book maker. I love photography. I believe that the one common link between assemblage, reading, book making, and photography is story. If my works of art are successful in telling a story to those who view them, then I am satisfied with the effort.
In short, I like to nail crap together and call it art.”
Gary’s influences are his mentor Michael deMeng, his femtor Andrea Matus deMeng, Joseph Cornell, Raymond Chandler, film noir, and The Marx Brothers.
Gary’s art has been included in exhibitions at Alverno College, Anderson Arts Center (Kenosha), ARTgarage (Green Bay), Cedarburg Cultural Center, Fond du Lac Public Library, Grafton Arts Mill, Kenosha Public Museum, John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan), Monmouth Museum of Art (NJ), Mount Mary University, Museum of Wisconsin Art, Two Fish Gallery, Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, and Wustum Museum (Racine).
Gary’s art is represented by Dee-Construction Gallery in Mineral Point, WI. A ten-year retrospective of Gary’s work was hung at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts in 2016. Gary was the curator of “Connections”, an exhibition of assemblage art at Re:Vision Gallery and Artist Studio in Kenosha in 2017.
Gary served forty years as a public librarian and now enjoys his retirement making art, taking photographs, gardening, and watching old films and current sports. Gary lives in Milwaukee with his wife Denice and his cats Boginskaya and Biakabutuka.
